Sam’s love for gardening continues to grow

/ Success Story
A dream to create accessible gardens for people to enjoy is spurring Sam Currie on in her horticulture studies.

I have worked in the aged care sector for many years, but during Covid I started to spend more time in the garden and realised that I had grown to really enjoy it.

When I saw that South West TAFE was offering a Free TAFE course in horticulture, I decided it was the perfect time for me to do something for myself.

Unfortunately, four weeks into my course I broke my leg which meant I had to take a break from my studies.

I really missed the course and was eager to get back to it and continue learning.

I have now completed my Certificate II in Horticulture and loved it so much that I’ve started studying the Certificate III in Horticulture.

I love learning about plant identification and my teacher’s enthusiasm and passion for native plants has rubbed off on me.

The teachers of this course have been brilliant. They are so passionate and bring so much different knowledge and enthusiasm to our classes.

Through my work with the elderly, I have come to realise how important gardening is for people’s mental health.

I would love to use my horticulture skills to establish an accessible garden specifically designed for the elderly and people with a disability.

I want people to have a space that they can come together, do some gardening and experience the joy from getting their hands in the dirt.
