Builder Transforms Passion into Business with Skills from South West TAFE

/ Success Story
A carpentry apprenticeship has led Jayme Cannon into starting his own business which he is working towards taking around Australia.

I had been working in hospitality and in a cabinetry shop when I was given the opportunity for work experience with a local Portland builder.

This turned into an apprenticeship, and I have loved where the trade has taken me.

There’s nothing better than the building trade. It keeps you physically fit, busy and gives you life skills and a job that’s always in demand.

I learnt a lot during my time at South West TAFE and my teachers were great at sharing their experience with us.

I was given a lot of opportunities and was grateful to have the chance to compete in the WorldSkills competitions – Australia’s biggest vocational education and excellence competitions.

It was a great experience, and I was surprised to win both the regional and national competitions.

I have now started my own business in Portland in general carpentry and renovations and I’m working on developing my business skills.

I’m hoping that in the future I can take my business on the road and travel around Australia while still working.
