Application & Entry Requirements
  • Selection Process
Our programs will require applying students to participate in a selection process to enable enrolment in the course.
Students applying to enrol in accredited training will be required to participate in a selection process prior to enrolling. The selection process involves a pre-training review to explore your career preference and ensure the course you are interested in will assist you in achieving this goal. In addition you will complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LNN) quiz so we can put in place any supports that you may need to help achieve a successful outcome. Depending on the course you are seeking to enrol in other elements of the selection process may include:

    attending an information session
  • completing an entrance test
  • presenting a portfolio of work
  • providing evidence of previous employment or study.

In some courses successful completion of a specific qualification may also be required. Please check the course information brochure or speak with the customer service centre for the selection process of your chosen program of study.

Direct to Institute Applications
The majority of South West TAFE courses require you to apply and enrol directly with us. Closing dates and requirements for the direct applications can vary between each department and/or course. All applicants are encouraged to check the course information on the website or directly with the relevant department.
Look out for advertised information session or contact your local campus to arrange a time with the department to discuss your enrolment.
You will receive a 2017 enrolment form from the course coordinator after consulting with them in regards to the units that you will be enrolling in. You will need to complete the enrolment form in full and ensure that the course coordinator and you have signed off on the units in which you will be studying.

Enrolling under the age of 17
By law you are not eligible to exit the Secondary school system until you have turned 17 years of age. However, it is recognised that sometimes the school system is not a good fit for everyone so there is a process that needs to be followed to ensure appropriate supports are in place.

If at the time of applying to enrol at South West TAFE you have not turned 17 years of age and:
HAVE completed Year 10:
You need to speak with your careers advisor at your school and obtain a transition from school form signed by your school Principal.
You will need to have a copy of this form with you when you come to enrol with South West TAFE.

HAVE NOT completed Year 10:
You need to obtain a letter of offer from South West TAFE. Issuing a letter of offer is not an automatic process and you will need to complete the course selection process including a pre-training review so we are sure that this is the right option for you. Make an appointment with the relevant course coordinator to complete the pre-training review.
The letter of offer needs to be taken to your School (or we can send it for you) and the school will complete a Transition From School form. The school may require you to attend an exit interview so they are also sure that TAFE is the right option for you.
The letter of offer and the transition from school form are submitted to the Department of Education for consideration of an school attendance exemption to be issued. This requires the signature of the Regional Director for the Department of Education, and is not an automatic process. Obtaining a school attendance exemption can take a couple of weeks to be considered.
If an exemption is issued, your school and South West TAFE will be notified and we will contact you to complete the enrolment process.

If you are aged under 18 at the time of enrolment, you are required to have a parent/guardian sign the enrolment form.

Students need to be fully enrolled and have your fees paid (or an approved payment plan in place) prior to the first day of class.

For entry requirement details on any courses you’re interested in, please check out the course brochure of the course you are interested in on our website at www.swtafe.vic.edu.au.
